The Stability Triangle
The single most important safety concept in forklift operation, and one of the most commonly tested.
A counterbalance forklift stays upright because of three contact points: the two front wheels and the single pivot point of the rear steer axle. Draw an imaginary line between these three points and you get the stability triangle. As long as the combined centre of gravity of the forklift and whatever it's carrying stays inside that triangle, the forklift stays stable. The moment that combined centre of gravity moves outside the triangle — because a load is too heavy, lifted too high, carried too far forward, or the truck is cornering or braking hard — a tip-over becomes possible.
Reading the Data Plate
Every forklift has one, fitted under Australian Standard AS 2359. Treat it as the final word, not a guideline.
The rated capacity figure only applies at the rated load centre shown alongside it — in Australia, that's standardised at 500mm from the face of the forks. Move the load's centre of gravity further out than that (a long, overhanging, or unevenly loaded pallet) and the true safe weight drops, even though the load itself hasn't gotten any heavier.
Working Out Safe Capacity at a Different Load Centre
This is genuinely part of the real assessment, not just theory — expect a calculation like this.
Worked example: A forklift is rated to lift 2,000kg at a 500mm load centre. You need to carry a load whose centre of gravity sits at 750mm (it's longer than a standard pallet).
Safe capacity = (Rated load centre ÷ Actual load centre) × Rated capacity
Safe capacity = (500 ÷ 750) × 2,000 = 1,333kg
The forklift's data plate still says "2,000kg" — but at this load centre, it can only safely carry 1,333kg.

What Training Actually Involves
The unit of competency (TLILIC0003) and the licence itself are the same everywhere in Australia — how individual RTOs structure the days varies, but the shape of it is consistent.
The Three Parts of the Assessment
This is the part people are most often surprised by — it's not just a multiple-choice quiz.
Knowledge (theory) test — covers hazards, legal responsibilities, safe operating procedures and forklift components. Often includes short-answer questions, not just multiple choice.
Calculations test — working out safe load capacity from a data plate and load centre distance, like the worked example in the Visual Guide tab. You generally can't use a calculator app on your phone; a basic calculator may be provided.
Practical assessment — pre-operational checks, driving and manoeuvring, picking up, stacking and placing loads at height, travelling through obstacles, and shutting down correctly, observed directly by an assessor.
All three must be passed. Some RTOs allow a same-day reattempt on part of the assessment if you don't pass first go; others require further training first. This varies by RTO and regulator, so ask your training provider directly what their policy is.
After You Pass
Completing the course doesn't hand you the licence directly — there's one more step.
You'll get a Statement of Attainment or Notice of Assessment from your RTO/assessor confirming you've met the competency standard.
You then apply to your state or territory's WHS regulator for the actual High Risk Work Licence (LF class), usually within a set window after your assessment — ask your RTO exactly how long you have and how to lodge it, since this detail can change.
Your 100 points of identification gets verified as part of this application — have it ready on assessment day, since some assessors sight and process ID on the spot.
Your photo licence card arrives by post. It's valid for 5 years and, once issued, works Australia-wide — you don't need to re-qualify if you move interstate.
